2023 Harvest Update

2023 Harvest Update

Well,  all the speculation as to how the rains will affect the vineyards, we are now seeing some great results.  Vineyards all were refreshed and while running late, fruit looks great and there is plenty of it.

We are making a small amount of wine this year, focus will be on whites, so let's take a look at what we have.

Sauvignon Blanc:  We are excited to be working with a new vineyard this year....Sycamore Ranch. This is a new vineyard off highway 246 in between Solvang and Buellton.  Planted in in 2018, the Ranch was used for breeding thoroughbred horses.  While still active with horses, a good portion of the property was planted to vineyards.  We harvested the Sauvignon Blanc on Friday October 6th.  The fermentation is completed, and we will be aging the wine in a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak barrels.  The date of picking this grape if about 3 to 4 weeks later than normal.

Grenache Rose:  We also obtained some Grenache fruit from the Sycamore Ranch as well for our rose.  This was also picked on Friday October 6th, and is currently aging in stainless steel tanks.  The fruit is also about 3 to 4 weeks later than normal.

Viognier:  The fruit for this wine is coming from Zaca Mesa Vineyard in the northern part of Santa Ynez Valley, up Foxen Canyon road which is a new source for us.   As of the date of this writing, we are still waiting for the fruit to ripen and get to the desired Brix level.  We anticipate harvesting this fruit by the end of October. This is usually about 4 weeks later than normal.

Grenache Blanc:  We are sourcing this fruit from a Vineyard that all the fans of Seal Beach Wines know well.....Estelle Vineyard in Los Olivos.  The fruit here is also expected to be picked by the end of October.  This will be the first white wine that Mike has produced from this vineyard, and we are really excited to taste the results.

Stay tunned, I will update this posting after the harvest is completed.

Fall Happenings at the Tasting Room

As cooler weather appears on the horizon, we have some exciting offerings here at the tasting room.  Come by and see us and take advantage of these specials, enjoy a glass of wine and escape from the daily grind.

2016 Chardonnay 3-pkg Special

Los Alamos Vineyard was planted back in the 1990’s, lies between the cool Santa Maria Valley appellation to the north, and the warmer Santa Ynez Valley to the south.  The region seems to have the best characteristics for both of those AVA’s.  The vineyard consists of mainly sand and limestone soils.  We pull our fruit from the same
area of the vineyard each vintage.  100% Chardonnay, clone 4, picked at night at 23.9 Brix,
and pressed without skin contact and fermented in neutral Franch oak barriques.
The wine was then aged for 20 months in about 20% new oak and the balance in neutral oak. 100 % malolactic fermentation.

An old school rendition of Santa Barbara County chardonnay.  Nose of tropical fruits, citrus and vanilla cream, followed by flavors of pineapple & fuji apple, notes of lemon creme brûlée, rich mouthfeel with a kiss of crisp acidity and spiced apple on the finish.

Retail - $90     Special - $81    discounts for Club Members

2016 Sangiovese - Estelle Vineyard

The vineyard lies in the northeast corner of the Los Olivos AVA, bordering Happy Canyon AVA.  The soils are well drained sandy loam, with cool wet winters and a warm dry summer.  A bit warmer then its neighbor Ballard Canyon to the west, and a bit cooler then Happy canyon to the east.  Seal Beach Winery has been working with this vineyard for over 10 years.

The grapes were first used to make our 2016 Rose of Sangiovese, being gently
pressed leaving about 30% of the grape.  They were then added to the rest of the
grapes, providing a wine with extended skin contact leading to deep purple color
and added structure. This wine will pair with your favorite pasta dish with red
sauce or if you are in the mood to BBQ, smoked BBQ pork ribs.

Hints of black tea & cherry on the nose, followed by bright flavors of
raspberry & cherry.  The tannins build slowly across your palate,
leading to a rich finish with notes of cured meats.
