2011 Natalie Grace Syrah Harrison Clarke Vineyard Ballard Canyon
Roger Harrison and Hilarie Clarke are long term partners. This was my first venture into their immaculately manicured vineyard. Stress, sun, soil and wind produce concentrated Rhone varietals. This blends their two dominate Syrah Clones.
Clone Estrella sits on the top of the vineyard. Barely a wisp of topsoil covers these vines and water deficit results from precipitation rolling down the hill. At the bottom of the vineyard, Clone Alban benefits from richer soil and water with intense sunlight.
Hand sorted, the grapes were immediately crushed and de-stemmed. An extensive cold soak was used for extraction and color stabilization. Open top fermentation was used with native Yeast. It was placed in large Cote-Rotie style Casks. 40% new French Oak aged for 26 months.
Harrison Clarke Vineyard is all about intensity. Deep purple color with a mint, pencil shavings, chocolate, cola and Blackberry nose. Laters of fruit on the palate with a full mouthfeel and eternal finish.
What to eat?
Hearty, rich foods such as roast pork, short ribs and beef tenderloin. Braised Meats work well. In the tasting room we pair this wine with Cambozola Black Label. Check out our cheese pairing menu here
